Question: I am going to be flying in Nov. with my 1 year old son what are some ideas so I can make him more comfortable in the process? Recently my son has been waking up in the middle of the night crying he sleeps with me and my wife and we have a nightlight in the room for him any ideas on what could be causing this?
Dear Joe,
Some things to keep him comfortable.
My #1 suggestion is if he is walking then let him down as much as possible in the airport. Find a way to let him run himself tired. Children sleeping on the plane is usually the best for the parent and the child.
#2. Make sure you bring plenty of bright colored toys for him to play with and age appropriate. Toy that have movement make children happy. Some books with movement as well.
#3. Remain calm. Remember it is not your job to take care of the neighbors. If someone else is stressed out about your child do not allow that stress to upset you. The more calm you remain the more your child will model you.
#4. Also a good baby massage helps to lower stress hormones like cortisol and increase happy hormones. Both of you could benefit from a great massage.
#5. I also like a blended oil called “Peace & Calming.” Although you do not give it to your child directly putting it on his blanket or toy can relax him and everyone else around him. http://www.youngliving.com/essential-oil-blends/Peace-And-Calming #844043.
As for what is making him wake up in the middle of the night? There are many things that could be doing it. A gas bubble or maybe he just misses you. Night time is a long time to be separated from the people you love the most and depend upon the most.
Best Wishes!
