My husbands son is 10 years old. From what we understand with the school, he does not communicate well with others, and is disruptive in class. He’s been diagnosed with ADHD. My husband was telling me that since he was a baby he had a habit of rocking himself constantly and a habit of picking at his finger nails. I always thought it was really common that children with autism rocked alot? Is this true?

There are many signs of autism and they vary depending upon the severity of the autism. I suggest this 10 year old be evaluated to determine what his current diagnosis is and this will better equip you and your husband to deal with the school.
Under the Federal IDEA – Individuals with Disabilities Education Act all schools are required to provide whatever is necessary via supports so that students who are have disabilities are able to attend school and function to succeed. Many times schools are not going to take this action because it puts a strain on their budgets. However it is the law. If you son is diagnosed with a disability then by all means do educate yourselves on what your rights are and what his rights are within the educational system. I suggest you contact the legal center for people with disabilities to see what all the school has to provide. Do NOT allow them to label him as a discipline problem so they don’t have to provide the necessary services. You are his most power advocates.
Best Wishes!
