Subject: My 2 yr old
Question: My 2 yr old displays lots of repetitive behavior for example he constantly wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, he is also very sensitive physically – he cant stand long sleeves, socks etc. He is very attached to a blanket – I have 2 older children and never experienced this with them. I just don’t know if this is a stage in his growth – he is very smart, knows his numbers, can read color words, knows shapes, some letters, etc..is this something i should worry about. Thanks
Answer: Dear Lorie:
Your 2 yr old sounds like he is emotionally and physically sensitive. Smart children often come with compensations in other areas like being more sensitive. I suggest getting the book, “The Highly Sensitive Child.” It is in paperback form and very easy reading with lots of good suggestions. Also, try out the “positive parenting,” book as well.
And then relax and enjoy your 2 year old and his uniqueness. Each child is different and we have to accept them on their own terms. Focus on what you appreciate about him and worry less. Enjoy, play, have fun!
