Question: She can not even say one word. I am really concerned, but I can’t approach my son with this because I asked once if she might have a hearing problem and he said no. She seems totally normal except for this. I am very worried. Should I be?

Answer: Dear Barbara:
You should be curious. An 18 month old who is not talking may not be talking for a variety of reasons. Sometimes families in their care and concern do too much and the toddler doesn’t have to talk. Sometimes it maybe they are just developing at a different pace. However, if she is not talking by age two I would recommend an evaluation by her doctor and possibly requesting a consultation with an expert in development.
