Subject: 22 yr old drinking
Question: Son is on bond for felony charges. Living with us, curfew at 7 PM.
His mom, him and I are are really getting along the best we had in years with the charges possibly being a wake up call. He still drinks. He has part time work. Should we find him Hobbies?. Does not want to stop drinKing. Over the years he has been to AA meetings, He doesnt want to go, we have not pushed this yet. Says he is a not a alcoholic, but his problems happen when he has been drinking. Any suggestions?
Not clear if alcohol is the only problem in his life.
Answer:
Yes I do have suggestions. If you haven’t already then start immediately going to Alanon meetings. You need to be there to learn from others how to set boundaries with your 22 year old son.
That you asked me if you should find him hobbies tells me that you need alanon worse than he needs AA. I know you will have a hard time believing me however if you keep doing what you are doing you will not ever be free of his drinking. (Google Alanon and find a meeting or go to stepchat.com and find an online meeting).
You and your wife deserve a life that does not revolve around your son, his drinking and his problems.
Loving him does not mean you have to live through each of his experiences!
Best Wishes!
