Subject: Communication w/my 3 year old
Question: My 3 1/2 year old son does not communicate well. He is extremely bright… loves to read, write, draw and learn. He is very affectionate with me and others, but when you try to talk to him, most of the time he will just mimic what you say to him. I mean, he can count to 60 and knows all of his letters, shapes and colors, but when you ask him how old he is, he just repeats the phrase back to you. I am not sure if it is a problem with his hearing, or something else?
ANY ADVICE IS APPRECIATED.
Thank you,
I would suggest you have him evaluated although it is probably not a problem do so for your own peace of mind.
Best Wishes!

QUESTION: I am in between insurance carriers, and will not have coverage for the next 30 days. I would like to talk to someone before then, but don’t want to do a bunch of evaluations until I have insurance. Do you think it would be most beneficial to meet with a behavioral specialist, or should I have his hearing checked first?
THANK YOU!!!!!
p.s. His teacher this morning suggested i have him tested for Autism.
Answer: Dear Tessa:
It cannot hurt to have him evaluated for autism. Fortunately these test are not uncomfortable physically. As for the insurance, as long as it is not life threatening, it can probably wait 30 days until your insurance kicks in and is probably preferable because you would encounter the usual waiting periods for pre-existing conditions.
