Subject: 2 yr old’s fear
Question: Is it normal for a 2 year old boy ( only child) to be extremely afraid of other children, even small babies, and adults ? He is very outgoing and outspoken at home around those he is comfortable with ( understandably so) and is even responsive to some adults as long as they keep their distance from him.
But as soon as they get to close or if another child tries to come near him to play or say hello – or do anything he gets very tense and freezes up, almost starts to tremble, will tug at his hair ( I know it’s a defense mechanism) and then will begin to cry. If this is a normal behavior, I will ease up and let him outgrow this phase. Or do you think we should seek some help ? I try to comfort his fears, but it doesn’t seem to help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks, Dawn
Answer: Dear Dawn:
It is hard to tell what is going on here. It sounds like trauma or anxiety however sometimes children just form shyness responses to others for no apparent reason.
I would check it out with a specialist who deals in infant mental health or child counseling. Do make sure you seek the advice from a qualified, experienced professional who specializes in children 0-5.
Best Wishes!
