8 month Old Crying Uncontrollably

Posted on August 1, 2011 by rachel.stenta@gmail.com

Hello,

I have an 8 mth old son who has been crying uncontrollably since birth. I talked to his doctor about this when he was 2mths old. I was told that he had colic and that it would subside by the time he was 6mths. It has gotten worse. He’s never happy or smiling he cries all day and most of the night.

He is not sleeping which is causing myself and my husband not to sleep. I can’t seem to get any help from my doctor. We are desperate for someone to help.

We feel there is something wrong with our child and we don’t know what it is or how to help him.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you, Tonesha

Dear Tonesha:

Poor little guy and you poor parents. Colic is so painful for babies. Realize this is terribly painful for him. I would strongly encourage you to take some infant massage classes and implement a daily or even twice a day infant massage with him.

There are so many benefits physically and emotionally for massaging little ones. One of the many physiological benefits is relieving colic.

I am sorry your doctors are not more supportive. Partially this is because no one seems to know anything about colic. I do know from breastfeeding my own children that it maybe due to food allergies. You didn’t say if you breast or bottle feed. If you are breastfeeding contact the LaLeche League support groups (do a google search) and ask them about food allergies. They can tell you how to eliminate certain foods from your diet until he weans. If he is bottle fed it maybe the formula. http://www.laleche.org/

Do however get the massage going right away I suspect you could use some sleep as well as your baby!
